Vic: Luna Park upset at proposed St Kilda sex zones

MELBOURNE, Aug 6 AAP - A proposal to set up tolerance zones for sex workers in Melbourne'sSt Kilda has been opposed by the operators of Luna Park.

A shortlisted site for male prostitutes abuts the 90-year old fun park whose operatorsare concerned about the effect of the sex trade on their visitors, particularly children.

Luna Park general manager Jason Todd said the selection of the Cavell Street site wentagainst Port Phillip Council's criteria which stated zones should not be located near"places where children congregate for recreation or cultural activities".

"If the shortlisted site for male street sex workers goes ahead, Luna Park is at riskof being known solely as a prostitution zone and (this) will heavily jeopardise the park'sability to maintain the perception of a clean safe environment," Mr Todd said.

Mr Todd said Luna Park operated 250 days a year, 150 of which included night openings.

A council spokesperson said all submissions from residents and local businesses wouldbe considered by an independent expert panel in October.

"It will be considered by our independent panel that is going to be considering morethan 300 submissions," the spokesperson said.

Port Phillip Council last week endorsed a shortlist of four streets as possible "sextolerance zones", where prostitutes can legally trade.

Two streets have been designated sites for female sex workers, one for male sex workersand another for transsexuals.

The streets include St Kilda Road/Inkerman Street, Lakeside Drive, Belford/Irwell carpark and a site near Shakespeare Grove/Cavell Street.

The tolerance zones are aimed at reducing the effect of prostitution on the suburb as a whole.
