NSW: Govt delays introduction of police search laws

SYDNEY, April 27 AAP - The NSW government will delay the introduction of amended policesearch warrant laws after the state's police association said operational issues neededto be ironed out.

NSW Police Minister John Watkins announced he would delay the planned May 1 launchof the legislation pending further discussions with the Police Commissioner Ken Moroneyand the NSW Police Association.

"The amendments were introduced to help police execute search warrants in the presenceof an arrested person," Mr Watkins said in a statement.

Mr Watkins said after meetings with the association and touring regional police stations,he was alerted to a number of operational difficulties arising from the amendments.

"The attorney-general and I have agreed the sensible solution is to put the new lawson hold," he said.

Mr Watkins said he would now continue to work with police to determine the best wayto improve search warrant powers.

"That's why I've consulted with the association, frontline police and the commissioner- who are all satisfied the postponement will give us the time we need to iron out anyproblems," he said.

A spokesman for Mr Watkins said the amendments were designed to eliminate any legalquestions about searching the house of a person who had been arrested by police.

The requirement of accessing the warrant through the court system would still apply, the spokesman said.
