Vic: Burrow congratulates Latham

MELBOURNE, Dec 2 AAP - The trade union movement today congratulated newly-elected Labor
leader Mark Latham and pledged to work with him to improve the lot of working families.

ACTU president Sharan Burrow said the task was now to unite behind Mr Latham to defeat
the Howard government.

"I urge Labor MPs to unite behind Mr Latham to work for an ALP government that can
implement policies for a fairer and more decent society," Ms Burrow told reporters.

Ms Burrow refused to comment on reports she had privately supported Kim Beazley in
the leadership contest.

She also dismissed suggestions of a policy rift between the ACTU and Mr Latham over
his support for tax cuts for higher income earners.

"I don't believe you will see any real difference between what's good for Australian
working people and the ACTU and the ALP leadership team," she said.
