Vic: Faulty pipe causes massive petrol spill

A faulty pipe is believed responsible for a petrol spill that spewed about two-thousand
litres of unleaded fuel into the Yarra River last night.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman COLLIN HARRIS says emergency services worked through
the night to contain the spill .. following the leak at Spotswood in Melbourne's inner-west.

Mr HARRIS says a faulty pipe at a Caltex facility at Newport is believed responsible.

Fire crews .. environmental officers .. and workplace safety officials .. were at the
scene last night attempting to contain the spillage.

Mr HARRIS has told ABC Radio the windy conditions helped dissipate the fuel .. with
most of it vaporising.
