EVENING ROUND-UP: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 1630
HELICOPTER WRAP (ADELAIDE)
South Australian police say it could take some days to identify those killed in a helicopter
crash carrying three of the ABC's top newsmen.
Veteran reporter PAUL LOCKYER, cameraman JOHN BEAN and pilot GARY TICEHURST were working
on a documentary on Lake Eyre when their chopper went down last night.
Assistant police commissioner NEIL SMITH says disaster identification experts are on
their way to the crash site, which is spread over a large area surrounded by water and
boggy land.
A local tour guide who spoke to the crew has told of later seeing a large fireball
in the distance.
ABC boss MARK SCOTT has paid tribute to three news gatherers at the peak of their craft,
passionate about finding great stories from across Australia to bring to the public.
ECONOMY (SYDNEY)
One the nation's top bankers believes the global economy is on the brink of another
economic crisis.
The warning came as Australia's share market dropped almost three-and-a half per cent
today after more falls on Wall Street and European bourses overnight.
NAB Capital chief economist ROB HENDERSON says after a nervous calm for much of the
week, global stock markets have turned into a sea of custard.
ANZ chief executive MIKE SMITH says policymakers in Europe and the US have failed to
show leadership in dealing with massive debt problems, and risk causing serious financial
and social pain around the world if the trend continues.
Federal Trade Minister CRAIG EMERSON says the US and European economies used to be
anchors of stability, but are now struggling.
THOMSON/FREEBODY (CANBERRA)
Embattled federal Labor MP CRAIG THOMSON says he hasn't done anything wrong, as a credit
scandal threatens to engulf JULIA GILLARD'S minority government.
Mr THOMSON is already facing scrutiny over the alleged use of a Health Services Union
credit card to pay for prostitutes when he was union secretary and now reports say phone
calls were made in 2006 to brothels from Melbourne hotel rooms hired by Mr THOMSON, but
he says the allegations are untrue.
Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD says she continues to have full confidence in the MP.
Meanwhile, Queensland's Liberal National Party has expelled a candidate who sent an
email saying he hoped Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD "follows the history" of assassinated
US President JOHN F KENNEDY.
And, the Victorian opposition wants a full investigation by the Ombudsman into links
between Liberal Party donations and the coalition's green wedges planning policy.
COAG WRAP (CANBERRA)
Mental health experts have addressed the country's leaders in Canberra and called on
them to adopt a national approach to improving well-being with a 10-year reform roadmap.
Former Australian of the year PATRICK McGORRY, Mental Health Council of Australia chief
executive FRANK QUINLAN and Catholic Priest and social policy expert Monsignor DAVID CAPPO
briefed the COAG meeting in Canberra for about an hour this morning .
They say poor access to coordinated, quality care leads to increased social exclusion
of Australians with severe and persistent mental illness.
Former Australian of the year PATRICK MCGORRY says following the GILLARD government's
first payment on mental health in the May budget it's now up to the states and territories
to get on board.
The briefing came as Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD faces a hostile meeting, with a bloc
of three Liberal premiers pushing for her to scrap the planned carbon tax.
SHOOTING (MELBOURNE)
Police say a double homicide in a Melbourne smash repair workshop is the result of
a failed business deal involving the two dead men and a third who was shot in the same
incident.
Police are quick to reject suggestions the killings have anything to do with feuding
families under investigation over shooting incidents in nearby suburbs.
Speculation was fuelled by both the location of yesterday's shooting in Brunswick and
the attendance at the scene of the police task force investigating a series of shootings
involving Lebanese families.
The three men are known to police, and to each other, while the victims are believed
to have been related.
PETERS (LOS ANGELES)
An American legal expert says the extradition process for Australian collar bomb suspect
PAUL DOUGLAS PETERS could take years if he decides to fight it.
50-year-old PETERS, who is currently locked up in a Kentucky prison, was arrested in
the US earlier this week in relation to the bomb hoax targeting Sydney schoolgirl MADELEINE
PULVER.
QANTAS ENGINEERS (SYDNEY)
Qantas engineers have announced industrial action - with a twist.
They say they'll stop work for one hour every weekday, starting next Thursday, until
the week before Christmas.
But they've offered to organise union members to work overtime, in place of the stopped workers.
BLAKE (MELBOURNE)
A Victorian judge says it's a travesty she's forced to register a young Australian
soldier as a sex offender.
MITCHELL JOHN NEVILLE BLAKE was 19 when he had sex with two underage girls, aged 15
and 14, after a night out in Malsmbury last year.
Judge LISA HANNAN says she has no choice but to register BLAKE as a sex offender, despite
the fact the sex was consensual - an order she doesn't consider just.
US EXECUTION (JARRATT)
A US man convicted of the 2001 rape and murder of an 88-year-old woman has been executed
by lethal injection in the US state of Virginia today.
Authorities from Virginia's Department of Corrections have confirmed 31-year-old JERRY
JACKSON was pronounced dead at 9:14pm local time.
It was the first time Virginia used the anesthetic pentobarbital during execution,
a substance generally used by veterinarians when euthanising animals.
RUSSIA USSR (MOSCOW)
Today Russia marks two decades since Soviet hardliners precipitated the demise of the
USSR with a botched coup.
Conservative top Soviet officials known as the Gang Of Eight sought to seize power
on August 19 in 1991 from MIKHAIL GORBACHEV, but failed.

--France to expand fibre optic network in 2011
INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
4 February 2011 - Eric Besson, French minister of industry and digital economy, expressed on Thursday hope that 2m French households will have super-fast broadband connection by end-2011.
At end-December 2010, one million households had fibre optic access compared with 960,000 at end-September 2010 and 500,000 at end-2008.
Currently, France ranks 15th among European countries in terms of households with access to very high-speed Internet.
Besson has welcomed the efforts of France Telecom (EPA:FTE) which plans to pump EUR2bn (USD2.7bn) into the deployment of fibre optic network in the period 2010-2015.
The company plans to equip with fibre optic cables some 3,600 communities in France by 2015.
The telecoms operator is ready to invest another EUR2bn between 2015 and 2020. Thus, the group hopes that 15m households in France will have access to the optic fibre network.

FED:Abbott backs Afghanistan mission=4
Mr Abbott said he would not impose limits on Australia doing its bit to keep the world
free of terrorists.
"The last thing we should do at a time like this with our soldiers mourning the loss
of their comrades is to waver in our commitment to work that our forces are doing in the
field," he said.
"Obviously our soldiers are paying a high price to protect Australians and others from
the threat of terrorism. But this is a very important struggle and it cannot be abandoned."
Mr Abbott said the issue at present was not the withdrawal of Dutch forces as they
had been substantially replaced by Americans.
"The issue at the moment is the increased tempo of operations in Afghanistan," he said.
Mr Abbott said it was important to try to ensure that Afghanistan had a reasonably
stable government to ensure it never again became a terrorist safe haven.
"My understanding, based at least in part on the briefing on that I had from the chief
of the defence force yesterday is yes it is achievable," he said.

Fed: Costello switch would have been good for Labor
Labor's campaign director says if the Liberals had made a late leadership change to
PETER COSTELLO .. they'd probably have delivered an even bigger federal election win to
KEVIN RUDD.
Giving the traditional post-campaign wrap-up at the National Press Club .. TIM GARTRELL
said Labor's November 24 win has exploded the argument that oppositions don't win elections
.. governments lose them.
And he says while Labor had contingency plans in case the Liberals switched leaders
.. in the end Mr COSTELLO was even less popular than JOHN HOWARD.
Mr GARTRELL says the government didn't understand that people are doing it tough ..
particularly in outer-metropolitan and regional areas.
He says there was a wave which swept up every demographic in Australia .. leading to
the five per cent swing to Labor.
Liberal Party campaign director BRIAN LOUGHNANE will give his address on December 19.

But no deadline was set for their complete withdrawal, and Washington rejected the pullback as insufficient. Lacking a timeline, the plan also was unlikely to satisfy the Lebanese opposition and the international community, which have demanded that all 14,000 Syrian soldiers leave the country.

CHICAGO (AP) _ Boeing Co. CEO Harry Stonecipher, brought back from retirement 15 months ago to boost the aerospace manufacturer's tainted image, has been forced out because of a new ethics scandal involving an affair he had this year with a female company executive. In a stunning announcement that left the exact circumstances behind the ouster unclear, Boeing said Monday the 68-year-old president and chief executive officer had resigned at the board's request a day earlier for improper behavior while carrying out the consensual relationship.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Jason Giambi provided most of the juice when the Red Sox played the Yankees on Monday night in the first reunion of the rivals since Boston's epic triumph last fall. New York's designated hitter, the symbol of baseball's steroids problem, arrived at the second annual hugely overhyped exhibition game, gave a mass interview, got a hug from Kevin Millar, took batting practice and signed autographs for 25 minutes. Then, as two men behind the plate screamed "Steroids! Steroids! Steroids!" in the fifth inning, he sent a pitch from left-hander John Halama over the fence in right-center field for his first home run of the spring. Giambi went 2-for-5 in New York's 9-2 win, leaving him with a .250 average (3-for-12) with two RBIs.

SBC Communications Launches Web Tool for Phone Service Connects; Feature Helps College Students Plan Last-Minute, Back-to-School Moves.
SAN ANTONIO -- Labor Day marks the traditional end of moving season and the beginning of the school year-making it one of the busiest times of the year for shopping for communications services.
For those looking for a simple, fast way to set up new phone service, help is just a click away: SBC Communications has launched an online tool to help speed up service orders for new customers in its SBC Pacific Bell and SBC Ameritech regions. The service also will be available to SBC Southwestern Bell customers the first week of September. Accessible 24 hours a day, the new online tool provides a quick and convenient option for customers who need to sign up for new phone service as they move to the states these regions serve -- ideal for college students heading back to school or those who prefer managing their relocation arrangements online.
Online new connect helps new customers set up phone service, choose features such as Caller ID, voice mail and Privacy Manager, or communications packages and select their preferred phone number online from a list of five choices (currently available only in SBC Pacific Bell), all via the SBC Pacific Bell or SBC Ameritech websites. Within a few days after receiving the order, new customers receive an email confirmation of their order and a confirmed new phone number. In the near future, customers also will be able to sign up for Cingular Wireless service, DSL Internet access service and SBC Long Distance, where available.
"SBC Communications' online new connect tool is particularly helpful for college students who've waited until the last minute to plan their Labor Day weekend moves, and are still scrambling to get everything done before they head back to school," said Denice Hasty, assistant vice president of emerging channels for SBC Communications. "Having the option of setting up phone service and taking care of other move-related tasks online is one way to ease the stress associated with the start of the fall semester, and the transition from fun and sun to tests and papers."
More than half of the 43 million moves in the United States this year will take place by September 2, and for consumers who choose Labor Day weekend for moving, the next two weeks could pack a lot of stress. Along with the hectic organizing and packing, making arrangements for new telephone service prior to a move is vital to ensure a smooth transition to a new location. To help consumers better manage a move, SBC offers the following tips to make the process easier:
-- Plan your Move Online: Consumers can visit www.moving.org for information and tips including suggestions on how to select a mover and a handy moving checklist. New SBC Pacific Bell and SBC Ameritech customers can set up phone service, order features and communications packages online at their convenience -- 24 hours a day -- by visiting the company website at www.sbc-pacbell.com, or www.sbc-ameritech.com. -- Remain Reachable. To minimize worries about how friends and family can get in touch during the moving period, consider using communications services such as a wireless phone, voice mail service, call forwarding and other tools that can help you receive important calls and messages while in transition. A long distance calling card can help ensure a low rate on calls from the road. Also be sure to coordinate a window of time where phone service works at both your new and old locations. -- Ensure Connections Will be Ready. When setting up communications services in a new location, inquire if you can keep your same phone number. Also ask communications providers if you can re-direct calls from your old number to a new one for a period of time through a pre-recorded message -- known by SBC as Intercept Number Referral Service -- that alerts callers that the number they called is disconnected and provides the new phone number. Also, check with your Internet service provider to see if you can keep existing e-mail addresses, and if you have dial-up service, if you can continue to use the same dial-in number. -- Consider Your Communications Options. Prior to the move, identify if your new home has an existing satellite connection, is DSL-ready, and already has multiple working phone jacks. Consider service packages that can deliver substantial savings through a single point of contact. Be sure to ask about new promotions or packages of services which may have become recently available. -- Rethink Your Communications Needs. Before moving, evaluate your new communications needs. You may save time and resources by thinking through what services you want and ordering them at one time. For example, consider whether you work at home, or use the computer for reaching out to family and friends, as guides for ordering and setting up communications services. If you want an Internet connection, be sure to ask if your new neighborhood has DSL Internet service.
For more information about SBC products and services that can help during a move or services that are available in your new area, please visit the SBC Pacific Bell website at http://www.sbc-pacbell.com/, http://www.sbc-ameritech.com/ or call 1-800-310-BELL (2355) for SBC Pacific Bell, or 1-800-244-4444 for SBC Ameritech. SBC Pacific Bell provides service in California. SBC Ameritech provides service in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio (online new connect capability not yet available in Ohio). Soon, new SBC Southwestern Bell customers also will be able to sign up for service online by visiting http://www.sbcswbell.com/.

He was Marriott first risk manager, having joined the company in 1977 as director of casualty claims.
MANAGED CARE SUITS FILED Six managed care companies are accused of defrauding their members in lawsuits filed late last month in federal court in Miami. The suits, filed by attorneys representing members of the plans, charge that the insurers failed to disclose to members that doctors were offered incentives to deny care and limit hospital admissions. Plaintiffs charge that the plans violated federal racketeering laws by defrauding members. Named in the suits are Aetna U.S. Healthcare, CIGNA HealthCare Inc., Foundation Health Systems Inc., PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., Prudential Health Care and United Healthcare Corp. An Aetna spokesman said that the plaintiffs are "stretching legal theories that don't exist." Attorneys may seek to have the suits against the insurers consolidated, along with a similar suit against Humana Inc. filed earlier, into a single case.
PENSION SURVEY A significant proportion of employees either have Internet access to their pension plans from home or want such access, according to a survey sponsored by CIGNA Retirement & Investment Services. Of employees that have Internet access at home, 35% can gain access to their retirement information online, the survey said. Of those who have Internet access but can't reach their pension information online, 38% want such access, the survey said. The greatest interest in receiving pension information through the Internet was expressed by employees aged 18 to 24, of which 38% wanted online access. That compares with 35% of employees aged 35 to 49 who wanted the access; 32% aged 25 to 34; 29% aged 50 to 64; and 28% over age 65. The survey of 1,013 employees nationwide was conducted in June for CIGNA by Bruskin Audits & Surveys Worldwide.
P/C NET INCOME DOWN A variety of factors contributed to a decline of about 28% in the property/casualty insurance industry's 1999 net income, according to a study released last week by the Insurance Services Office Inc. According to the ISO, the industry's net aftertax income fell to $22.17 billion last year, compared $30.77 billion in 1998. The ISO report cited increased underwriting losses, lower investment income and realized capital gains and very sluggish premium growth as reasons for the drop. Insurers' underwriting los-ses grew by more than 39% to $23.39 billion last year compared to 1998, while net investment income fell 3.3% to $38.61 billion in 1999.
STATE SUES GUNMAKERS New York has become the first state to sue gunmakers. In a suit filed in Manhattan last week, the state said it seeks to alter the way that gun manufacturers and wholesalers conduct business. The lawsuit, which does not seek monetary damages but instead aims to change gun industry practices, charges eight gunmakers and eight wholesalers with contributing to a public nuisance by manufacturing and distributing guns they know will end up in the hands of criminals. Specifically, the suit seeks to require gunmakers to add safety features to handguns. In addition, it seeks to prevent sales to those retailers that have track records of selling to criminals and to create a court-appointed monitor of the system by which guns are distributed. The illegal possession or distribution of handguns is a public nuisance under New York law. Such an approach makes this lawsuit a greater threat to the gun industry than the numerous suits filed by cities, according to the New York attorney general's office. Those lawsuits assert that gunmakers have been negligent, which is a harder standard to prove.
FEMA EVALUATES EROSION COSTS Exposure to erosion losses should be taken into account when National Flood Insurance Program rates are set, according to a report issued last week by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Erosion along U.S. coastlines could cause an estimated $500 million in losses annually if current population and erosion trends continue, said FEMA Director James Lee Witt as he released FEMA's "Evaluation of Erosion Hazards" at a Washington press conference. Roughly 25% of the structures currently within 500 feet of Atlantic, Gulf Coast, Pacific and Great Lakes shorelines will be lost to erosion within the next 60 years, he said. As a result, the report recommends that Congress allow FEMA to account for the cost of erosion when setting NFIP rates, said Mr. Witt. Current law forbids FEMA from considering erosion risks when determining rates. The report also recommends that Congress authorize FEMA to prepare erosion maps similar to the flood plain maps the agency already charts. Such maps would allow municipalities and developers to choose less erosion-prone areas on which to build.
TOBACCO COMPANIES WIN CASE Smoking was not a substantial cause of a longtime smoker's lung cancer, a New York state court jury found last week in a surprise legal victory for the tobacco industry. Other factors, such as exposure to asbestos, carcinogenic plastics and fumes -- and not 30 years of smoking -- caused Clyde Anderson's cancer, the jury ruled, according to attorneys in the case. The decision "shows that these cases are truly individual, and you cannot determine liability without looking at the individual facts of each case," said Michael York, a lawyer representing Philip Morris Cos. Inc. The decision by the Kings County Supreme Court also supports tobacco companies' contention that smokers are aware of the inherent risks of smoking, said Stephen J. Kaczynski, a lawyer at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue in New York who represented R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc., which was the lead defendant in the case.
BRIEFLY NOTED The Senate Judiciary Committee last week voted 11-7 in favor of the Class Action Fairness Act, which would permit the removal of certain interstate class-action suits from state to federal courts. The bill's supporters, including employer groups, say it will greatly reduce so-called forum shopping, in which plaintiffs attorneys attempt to file national class-action suits in the most plaintiff-friendly state courts. . . .Fitch IBCA has upgraded its financial strength rating of the Insurance Co. of North America intercompany pool to A+, with a stable outlook. The INA pool represents the bulk of Bermuda-based ACE Ltd.'s U.S. operations. Fitch said the upgrade reflects improved underwriting results. . . .A.M. Best Co. has upgraded its financial strength rating of Farmers Insurance Group to A+ from A. Best's upgrade reflects Farmers' improved performance and strengthened capitalization as part of the Zurich Financial Services Group.
Xybernaut(R) Is Granted Japanese Patent for Body Worn Computers; Builds on U.S. Wearable Patent Issued in 1994.
FAIRFAX, Va., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Xybernaut Corporation (Nasdaq: XYBR), the leader in wearable computing, has been granted Japanese patent #2,873,268. It is viewed as a landmark patent covering Xybernaut's wearable computing concepts and technology. This Japanese patent corresponds with the U.S. Patent 5,305,244 issued on April 19, 1994 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which is Xybernaut's earliest patent and is considered the earliest reference to a self-contained, wearable computer.
"Since the wearable computer has been recognized as the ultimate form of mobile computing, we believe that this Japanese patent puts Xybernaut in a strong position in the Asian market and thus gives it more advantages in the field of wearable computers than any other company," said Kaz Toyosato, Executive Vice President, Xybernaut, Far East Operations.
James Ralabate, Xybernaut's patent counsel, also noted for his earlier development of Xerox's dominant patent position, went on to say, "This patent recently granted by the Japanese Patent Office encompasses one of the most important and basic inventions of Xybernaut Corporation. This is the first Japanese patent to issue of several significant patent applications for Xybernaut now pending in Japan. We expect that these pending applications when issued, together with other corresponding patent applications in the USA and several foreign countries, will further enhance our already firm world- wide patent position in wearable computing."
Ed Newman, Xybernaut President said, "We are successfully building an international IP position for Xybernaut in the wearable computing industry. Xybernaut intends to both aggressively license world-class manufacturing and marketing organizations, as well as require compliance of our worldwide IP position."
The Mobile Assistant(R) IV (MA IV(TM)) began shipping to customers in December 1998. It consists of a belt-worn computer, a color VGA head-mounted display suspended in front of either eye with microphone and earphone, an optional wrist-mounted flat panel touch screen color display or keyboard, a battery pack, and integrated voice-recognition software. With base pricing below $5,000, the market for wearable PCs is now attractive for applications where computers have never been used before and to those organizations seeking to leverage the productivity aspects of wearables not available in conventional computing.

SOUTH AFRICA : Vodacom reveals up to 43% savings on new data pricing.
Vodacom today revised its data services structure and pricing which will see contract data customers reap savings of up to 43% and get double their data for free with Night Owl, moving the effective savings to as high as 72%.
The move means that from 1 August customers will pay less for accessing the Internet. Customers will now pay as little as 7 cents per MB for data consumption.
"Vodacom's change to red brought with it the promise of real changes to the network, customer service and value. We hope these price reductions will contribute to making the Internet more affordable and give our customers an enhanced connected experience," says Pieter Uys, Chief Executive Officer at Vodacom.
In addition to the savings, all existing and new Vodacom contract customers will be given another allocation of the same size as the subscribed data bundle to use anytime between midnight and 5AM. This service, called Night Owl, previously only on promotion, is now available as standard to all Vodacom contract subscribers.
Contract customers will receive more value from these revised Broadband Standard prices. To illustrate this additional value, Vodacom customers who previously bought a MyMeg 110 data bundle at R88 (80c per MB), will now only pay R49, for a MyMeg 100 (49c per MB) - a cost saving of 39% per MB. They will also get double their data for free resulting in a net saving of 69%.
Existing Vodacom contract subscribers will automatically benefit from the new tariffs and will be migrated to the next bigger bundle size while paying less. For example, current 300MB subscribers will be migrated to 500MB, at a lower overall tariff.
Over and above the Broadband Standard price reductions, Vodacom also provides the following services:
All Vodacom Broadband Internet customers receive Vodacom's free e-mail service with a storage capacity of 3GB; and
Two hours of free technical support available for Broadband contract customers. Vodacom technicians come to customer's homes to help them with installing the modem software for the first time, or trouble shooting an existing installation and setting up a free Vodacom email address, including up to 5 aliases. To access free technical support service customers should Call 082 155 during office hours.
"We are committed to finding ways to make our customers smile and we will continue in focusing all our efforts towards delivering on this promise." Uys concluded.

Pakistan coverage is very biased.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
It upsets me to seeAa biased journalists who either deliberately or by ignorance negate the facts when analysing the
situation in Pakistan. Let me list down the basic facts once for all.
1. The general elections on February 18 wereAa boycottedAa by almost ALL the Religious political parties e.g. the Jamaat i Islami, JUP etc. as they
doubted the fairness of the exercise under President Musharraf. Hence, the precipitation of the results in favour of PPP or the Nawaz League (who themselves decided to participate at the last minute after earlier flip flops on the issue )wasAa more by default than by any merit and reflects a flawed picture of the electorate's will.
2. It would do well to remember that earlier under Musharraf, the first democratic elections resulted in the Muthida Majlis Amal ( MMA) , an
umbrella for all religious parties, forming the government in Baluchistan and the Frontier provinces. And the same extremist elements aided and abetted the Talebanisation inroads into the settled areas of Pakistan which Musharraf tried to resist by miltary action in a timely manner.
3. So the menace of extremism is still very much alive and pseudo leaders like Nawaz Sharif (a product of GeneralAa Ziaul Haque) are symapthetic to religious extremists and are fooling the masses.
4. Of the total ballots cast in the February 18 elections, the second highest tally ( more than 8 MN ) went to parties ( PML Q and MQM )
supporting Musharraf;s policies. This fact is always downplayed by design.
5. Can any analyst honestly say that the PPP and the Nawaz League are 'Democratic ' by any stretch of imagination ; Undoubtedly, they are strictly Family limited concerns. What hypocrisy ;

Carolina Mudcats Add TuneIn Radio Mobile App to Their Lineup Card.
TuneIn Radio (formerly RadioTime) and the Carolina Mudcats Baseball Club, the Southern League (AA) affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, announced the team will stream its live game day radio broadcasts to a dedicated station on TuneIn Radio, enabling fans to listen on their connected home and mobile devices. The Mudcats are the first professional baseball team to create an Internet radio stream exclusively for TuneIn Radio to complement its terrestrial radio broadcast. Click to Tweet: Carolina Mudcats baseball on TuneIn Radio: http://bit.ly/dLetSm "Fans who couldn't attend the games relied on portable and car radios to hear the action, and today millions of Americans are carrying a much better radio in their pocket or purse at all times - their smartphones," said Joe Bourdow, Chairman, Play-by-Play Sports Properties, the broadcast partner of the Carolina Mudcats. "The decision to make our radio broadcasts available on a mobile app was an obvious one, and so was partnering with TuneIn Radio because of the large user base and the fact that the app is available across such a wide variety of devices."
RadioTime and the TuneIn Radio app feature a directory of more than 50,000 AM/FM and Internet-only radio stations and podcasts airing in 140 countries and broadcasting in 55 different languages, the largest selection of any radio app. The TuneIn Radio mobile app is available for the iPhone, iPad and all devices running on the Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry and webOS operating systems, as well as a wide range of connected home audio devices and televisions.
"Baseball and radio have a long history together, and we believe this partnership will mark a significant milestone in that history," said Bill Moore, founder, TuneIn Radio. AUSTRALIANS WEALTHIER THAN EVER: POLL.
CANBERRA, April 13 Asia Pulse - Australian households may feel they are suffering under the burden of day-to-day living, but apparently Australians have never been wealthier.
New data suggests that individual wealth is at record highs and debt levels are at a four-year low.
The data - compiled by the Federal Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics and released on Wednesday - showed that private-sector wealth rose by 1.3 per cent in the final three months of last year to a record A$6 trillion (US$6.26 trillion).
Commonwealth Securities (CommSec) calculates that per capita wealth increased $2600 on average in the December quarter to ,600.
As such, CommSec chief economist Craig James believes consumers are more focused on perceptions rather than reality.
"For most, the perception is that they are going backwards - the cost of living is rising, incomes aren't keeping up and wealth levels are stagnating," Mr James said.
"But the reality is that incomes continue to grow at a faster pace than prices, while balance sheets are improving through record wealth levels and reduced debt levels."
Private-sector debt fell by 6.2 per cent in the December quarter, the biggest fall in nine years, and is 11.6 per cent down on a year ago - a slide that is unprecedented in the past 50 years, Mr James said.
Per capita debt stands at a four-year low and average of ,056.
The report coincided with the latest reading of consumer confidence, which showed a modest improvement on the previous month and helped by steady interest rates, a strong Australian dollar and buoyant jobs prospects and security.
The Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index rose by 1.2 per cent in April to 104.1 points, holding above the key 100 level that points to there being more optimists that pessimists, but remains well below a peak of 119 last August.
There were a number of negatives in the past month that would have restrained consumer enthusiasm, resulting in what Westpac chief economist Bill Evans described as a "lacklustre" outcome.
"We have seen the frightening events in Japan and ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and north Africa," Mr Evans said.
"This has seen the crude oil price rise eight per cent since the last survey and 25 per cent since the beginning of the year."
Households have seen petrol prices rise three per cent in the past month and 13 per cent this year.
Mr Evans said while the strength of the dollar has restrained petrol prices, expectations among households are likely to be for even higher prices as the holiday period approaches.
Other data showed that if you want a job, it's best to look online rather than trawling newspapers.
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations monthly vacancies report showed there were 239,600 skilled jobs posted on the internet in March while there were just 1800 newspaper job advertisements.
As such the department is considering canning its long-running newspaper ads series - or the skilled vacancy index (SVI) - and instead relying on its internet vacancy index (IVI) to gauge demand for jobs.
The IVI rose by 0.7 per cent in March in trend terms and by a robust 10.3 per cent seasonally adjusted.
"This is another piece of the jigsaw puzzle which shows a re-acceleration in the economy since the Queensland floods and cyclone," NAB Capital chief economist Rob Henderson said.
